Book of Golden Deeds Honoring Fire Chief Fred Friedl III (Ret.)
The Exchange Club of Gurnee held a Book of Golden Deeds Award Banquet to honor Fire Chief Fred Friedl III (Ret). on February 24, 2018 at Primo restaurant in Gurnee.
Fred was the Gurnee Fire Chief from 1996 to 2017. He was a Firemedic, Fire Inspector, Lieutenant, Shift Commander and Fire Chief at the Wood Dale Fire Protection District 1 from 1972 to 1996.
Fred has been a member of the Exchange Club of Gurnee since 1996. Fred has always volunteered an extraordinary number of hours serving our community. He was honored by the Gurnee Exchange, Illinois Lincolnland Exchange (2006-2007) and National Exchange Club when he received the 2007 “Volunteer of the Year Award” at the National Convention in Portland Oregon. He was also honored as the 2007 “Exchangite of the Year” during Gurnee Community Days and most recently was presented the 2016-2017 “Distinguished Service Award”. Fred has served as our Gurnee Exchange President (2004) and member of the Executive Board along with Chair of the 9-11 Remembrance Committee.
Chief Fred has served our Village, Fire District and our Exchange Club in a moral, ethical and efficient manner. He improved the well-being and safety of our citizens and strived to provide quality services. He has met our Exchange mission to inspire our community to be a better place to live.
Fred's family, Gurnee, Lincolnland and National Exchange members and the fire fighting community attended the event.
Club member and VP Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs Pam Oster emceed the event and did the Words of Welcome. Fred's brother-in-law Kirk Lunde did the Invocation. Fred and his wife Lori's children Danielle, Stephanie and F. Nicholas led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Club President Mike French greeted the gathering. Phil DeRuntz of the Warren Waukegan Fire Protection District , Exchange Club member and Battalion Chief (Ret.) Barry Henby, and Grayslake Fire Protection District Chief John Christian spoke about Fred.
National Exchange Club President-Elect Scot Warren presented the Book of Golden Deeds Award to Fred. Club member Deanne Fisher presented the awesome commemorative scrapbook she created.
After remarks from Fred, the event concluded with the Covenant of Service. Exchange members, Fred's family and the fire fighting community all enjoyed this great event! Please see more pictures on the photo album page.
